Cinnamon Rolls --- My Baby steps in Baking !

It's really amazing that while i am game for experimenting with a wide variety of dishes, i get intimidated by baking !!! I have lost count of the number of cakes/cookies/bread recipes that has been bookmarked by me for getting started. After i started blogging my cooking adventures i was even more awed by the lovely baking posts of my fellow bloggers, and that's when i decided to throw caution to the wind and get started. A little credit is also due to my hubby who is now at the receiving end of my baking disasters (though he bravely says all is well). On a serious note, he is motivating to put my best and so is my lovely sister suchitra. She has a wonderful space where she writes about her joys of cooking at Flavors---- .

Now enough with this mushy history and let me get started about my baby steps in to the awesome world of Baking. I started with some basic cookies and cinnamon rolls. For a first attempt they turned out decent and has given me enough confidence to venture out and hopefully conquer...

The reason for starting with cinnamon rolls was because my daughter wanted me to make them when she saw the mouth watering picture from my sisters' blog.

Ingredients:-

For the dough:-
  • All purpose flour (550 gm)
  • Dry Yeast (7 gms)
  • Melted Butter (70gms)
  • Warm Milk (210ml)
  • Sugar (75gm)
  • Eggs (2)
  • Pinch of Salt
For the filling:-
  • Cinnamon Powder (1tsp)
  • Brown Sugar (200 gms)
  • Butter (at room temperature--80gms)
For the egg wash:-

  • Beat one egg along with 2 tsp of milk and set aside.

Method:-

Soak the dry yeast in some warm milk with little sugar and let it raise for 10-15 minutes.Once it starts frothing and raising it can be used in making the dough.

In a bowl mix all the ingredients for the dough and knead them smoothly. Add some flour if sticky and store separately covered with a damp cloth.

Let it raise and double in size. It takes an hour or so---

In the meanwhile prepare the filling by mixing the brown sugar, cinnamon powder and butter to a fine paste
Instead of brown sugar i used demerara sugar which is nothing but natural brown sugar. They have larger crystals and so better to grind them to a fine powder.

When the dough has risen, knock back the dough by punching off the air. Sprinkle some flour on the work space and roll out on the dough to 0.5 cm thickness. Now spread the filling on the dough and carefully roll it along to form a log shape.

Cut it in to equal sizes and place it on the baking tray. Cover it with a damp cloth and let it raise for 10 more minutes.

In the meanwhile, preheat the oven @ 190 C in bake mode.

Give it a quick egg wash with a brush and load them for baking. Bake them for 15-20 minutes till golden brown. The yummy flavour of cinnamon starts filling up our senses and yes  i broke out in to a little jig at my first decent ending!

Serve it as a tea time snack or snack it any time!
